You Asked: How to Cut Your Own Fringe Without Ruining Your Life

Here’s the thing: Cutting your fringe on your own can be disastrous. And despite advice from our favourite hairstylists (most suggest you put down the scissors and head to the salon), we still get frustrated and want to hack away in moments of weakness. So, we’re here for you. We tapped Dayna Goldstein, senior stylist for Ted Gibson, as well as New York City stylist and salon owner Nunzio Saviano for a step-by-step guide to getting it right.
You should definitely invest in a proper pair of scissors if you’re going to be cutting your own fringe. They should be made of Japanese steel to achieve the best results. However, a hairstylist friend hinted that if you just need to trim a few dead ends, you can use straight nail scissors in a pinch.

Now blow-dry your hair as you would normally. When cutting bangs, your hair should be completely dry. Make sure all hair around the hairline is dry, assess any cowlicks, and make sure your hair is laying down flat in front of your face.
Separate the fringe from the rest of your hair, and clip your hair back so it doesn’t get in the way.
Grab an inch of hair (about the width of nose) starting with the middle section and begin to cut at a 45-degree angle. Hold the hair between your fingers and cut small amounts at each time. Or you can use a wide-tooth comb for tension and as a guide. The biggest mistake you can make is cutting them too short at first. Yikes. Start by cutting them a bit longer than usual, and continue to snip until they’re just right. (Your fringe should end at the corners of each eye.)
Once you’re done with the middle section, grab hold of the hair on the left or right and side and repeat the process.
Hair spray is always helpful in the end to help place your fringe where you want it.
