Runway How-To: The Ladylike Waves Seen at Carolina Herrera

Victoria Hoff

It's time to add "flat waves" to our hairstyle vocabulary—as oxymoronic as the word pairing sounds. Though we typically think of wavy hair as loose spirals (often of the tousled, beachy variety) at the Carolina Herrera show yesterday, Tresemmé lead stylist Orlando Pita made the case for a subtler, more refined, and uniform bend to the hair, for an effect that was fresh but no less feminine. "We wanted it to have a very ethereal and angelic edge but with a modern feel," he said.

To create the style, Pita began by roughly blow-drying the hair, working Tresemmé's Expert Selection Get Sleek Blow Dry Balm ($6) through the hair with a round brush and using a comb to create a straight center part. He then gathered the hair in two-inch sections and used a 1.5-inch curling wand to create very loose S-bend waves and rolled the barrel down the hair as he did so. (You can do this with a flatiron, too—just create an S shape with the section of hair, and clamp it down from root to tip.)

Pita finished by taming flyaways with the brand's Smooth and Silky Shine Spray ($6) and spritzing Perfectly (un)Done Hairspray ($10) to seal the style. Et voilàa modern take on ladylike waves that works as well with jeans as it does with a Carolina Herrera gown.
