Why We Love Brown Eyeliner (and You Should Too)

Elinor Block

Brown eyeliner seems like the wet blanket cousin of the darker, and much cooler, black version. But a few weeks ago we had a revelation of sorts: Brown is definitely the new black. At this year's Met Gala, Kendall Jenner posted a photo on Instagram of her gorgeous eye makeup. However, instead of a smoky eye or a striking noir, on her eyelid was a softer hue—it was a muddy brown. Rather than looking flat or washed out, as if she wasn't wearing enough makeup, it looked refined and romantic. Keep scrolling for our favourite brown eyeliners and why you should get this look.

So why is brown eyeliner having a moment of late? Well, for starters, it's the summer. In the winter, your skin is a little lacking, which means we prefer to go for bolder colours to make our eyes stand out (and probably not make us look so tired). Brown is perfect for the warmer months to give us a softer, more romantic appearance.

We spoke to Clinique UK Colour Pro Florrie White, who often does that makeup for likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Alexa Chung, who explained why she's a real lover of the softer hue:

"More often than not I opt for a deep dark chocolate brown eyeliner, whether it be a pencil or a liquid liner, yet I almost always team it with the blackest of mascaras. I find it is less harsh than black eyeliner yet it still gives intensity around the lash line and draws out golden, green and blue flecks in the eyes."
