Update: Lip Smackers ISN'T Actually Going Away

There are few things that hit the heart as hard as pure nostalgia, which would explain why the world freaked out this weekend when news broke that Bonne Bell Co., maker of every ‘90s child’s beloved Lip Smackers, was shutting down its operations in Ohio and laying off all 91 employees. Cue the tears and cries of, “Why, God, why?!”

Cleveland.com reported that the Bonne Bell and Lip Smacker businesses would be sold to Markwins International Corp., which also owns the Wet 'n Wild drugstore beauty brand. But here’s a recent update: Lip Smackers just released a statement on their Facebook page a few hours ago that reads:

“Thank you everyone for your concern and loyalty for the Bonne Bell Company. We are overwhelmed with all the Lip Smacker and Bonne Bell Cosmetics love you have all shown over the years! The Lip Smacker and Bonne Bell brands have been sold but WILL continue to be available for purchase in the US and internationally. This is a revamping to the brands and we are excited to see what the future holds! So don't worry, you won't have to live in a Lip Smacker-less world!”

In other words, it seems the fruit- and soda-flavored chapsticks of our youth will still be available, though in a “revamped” form. We’re curious to see what that means and, in the meantime, we'll be clutching our Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers ever so tightly.

What was your favourite Lip Smacker flavour? What do you think the newly revamped product will be like? Sound off below!
