Everyone’s Talking About… Liquid Bronzers
Now that the sun has finally got its hat on (well, kind of), we can officially dig out our summer makeup: bronzer, BB creams and bright lipsticks. But something you may not have stashed away last year is a liquid bronzer, because, let’s face it, you can’t beat a sun-kissed bronzing powder. Until now that is. Ladies (and gentlemen), liquid bronzers are having a moment. This year’s summer beauty launches have “liquid bronzer” written all over them, and it’s got everyone excited, including the pros. “I’ve always been an advocate of liquid formulas, so it’s great to see that the industry is now embracing this too,” says makeup artist Daniel Sandler.

“The move towards the ‘makeup-less makeup’ trend has been a huge influencer,” says Daniel. “They act as a second skin, helping to achieve the illusion that you are ‘lit from within.’”
They’re also super simple to apply thanks to their soft, sheer texture; “Unlike powder bronzer, you don’t need to worry about getting it wrong because they’re so easy to blend,” explains Lisa Potter Dixon, head makeup artist for Benefit Cosmetics. You could say it’s the easiest way to go from English rose to California babe without getting into a powdery mess, not forgetting the fact that a liquid bronzer can save you money too; “They last for ages because you need very little,” says Lee Pycroft, international makeup artist.
The beauty of a liquid bronzer is that it suits almost everyone; “Anyone who wants to give their complexion a boost can wear one,” says Lisa.
However, whilst it acts as the perfect natural tint on its own for some, those who suffer from redness should apply a thicker base beforehand, as liquid textures can shift quite quickly, exposing blemishes and problem areas. “Apply concealer and/or foundation first and then layer your liquid bronzer over the top,” Lee advises. “If you go overboard you can always blend in a touch of concealer to stop it from looking murky.”
To apply, just think of it as your normal bronzer; “Using it all over your face will look messy so put some on your cheekbones, your nose, the tip of your forehead and chin then down your neck, adding a bit on your chest too for continuity,” Lee says.
When it comes to tools, the brush vs. hands debate lives on, but it all depends on what finish you’re after; “Use a synthetic brush for a sculpted, contoured finish or your fingers for a softer glow,” advises Daniel. “The desired result should always be a radiant, healthy glow, and the secret is to blend, blend, blend.” To achieve the perfect contour with your liquid bronzer, “Dot it on the areas you usually contour—under your cheekbones, on your temples and under your jawline—then blend it in using either a sponge or a fluffy eye shadow brush for subtle definition,” explains Lisa.
(Psst! When autumn hits and you’re not quite ready to let go of your glow, add a drop of liquid bronzer into your foundation. No one needs to know!)
