Genius Beauty Secrets From the Streets of L.A.
The world is full of inspiration, from the runway to the red carpet, but one of our favourite places to find it is right outside our door. Whether while wandering the Fairfax flea market, shopping at The Grove, or marathon-brunching at L.A.’s most popular vegan hotspot (Gracias Madre), we’re constantly inspired by the women in Byrdie’s home city of Los Angeles.
Because real-life beauties are a wealth of awesome grooming secrets you might never otherwise hear about, we're making it our civic duty to approach the real girls of the world and learn their ways in an ongoing Street Beauty series. First, we brought you skincare secrets from the streets of Korea, and now, we're sharing beauty tips from the women of Los Angeles. Leave it to L.A. ladies to have some seriously natural, low-maintenance beauty hacks.
Keep scrolling for six clever beauty tips straight from the breathtaking (and super cool) real women of Los Angeles.
Name: Silja Danielsen
Spotted at: The Grove, shopping at Zara with a friend
Beauty Tip: We approached Danielsen to find out the secret behind her glowing skin. “I drink aloe juice as often as possible because I had read that it helps hold on to the nutrients in food we consume everyday,” she told us. “For a while I kept getting lots of compliments on my skin and couldn't figure out what I was doing differently and then it hit me! It's the aloe! Or the aloe glow,’ I call it.”
Her second secret weapon: “I try to eat as clean as possible and incorporate turmeric into my daily routine. Turmeric helps eliminate bloating and other toxins from my body, and I also notice that it helps keep my California glow.”
Name: Zoi Mantzakanis
Spotted at: Gracias Madre, enjoying Saturday brunch with her boyfriend
Beauty Tip: If you’re eating at famed vegan go-to, Gracias Madre, you’re probably a pretty natural-leaning type (that, or you’re there for the margaritas). Mantzakanis’s no-frills beauty tips put her in the former camp. “I use raw shea butter cream on the body every day instead of normal creams, and also cold-pressed almond oil,” she said. As for that enviable pout? “I use Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream ($21) for my lips.” To make her eyes look more awake while maintaining a barefaced no-makeup look, she told us that she uses a Mac nude-colored eyeliner pencil ($16) to rim the inside of her water line.
Name: Jordan Seaton
Spotted at: Melrose Trading Post, scouting flea market finds
Beauty Tip: While perusing the various vendors at the Melrose Trading Post flea market on Sunday, we were drawn to Seaton’s dreamy, enviable hair—seriously, would you look at those waves? Said Seaton, “My secret is that I don’t ever brush my hair. I just don’t brush it, and it builds and builds volume. Is that weird?” Nope, from one non-brusher to another, we feel you!
Name: Madison Ruggieri
Spotted at: Grand Central Market in Downtown L.A.
Beauty Tip: We couldn’t stop obsessing over the curtain bangs, fearless red color, and impossibly perfect textured waves on Ruggieri, one half of the founding duo of men’s grooming site The Motley. Talk about dream hair.
Ruggieri’s routine? “I typically blow-dry my bangs and spritz salt spray (Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray ($27) through the rest for texture before letting it air dry—it’s less damage and less work! My hair is naturally thick and wavy so I just use a curling wand to touch up the waves in the morning, after sleeping on it. I use a very light amount of Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Humidity Hair Spray ($18) to finish so it doesn’t frizz.”
Of course, we also had to know which curling wand is her go-to: “I use the Sultra The Bombshell 1-inch wand ($130)—it gives more natural waves than a standard curling iron with a clamp.”
“Since my job is in men’s grooming, I actually steal a lot of my products from the boys,” said Ruggieri of her skincare routine. She likes Herbivore Botanicals Hydrating Face Oil ($36). “I mix it with moisturizer—it’s packed with nutrients and makes skin glow,” she shared.
Name: Nicole Branch
Spotted at: Gracias Madre, brunching with a group of friends
Beauty Tip: Branch’s flawless skin, stunning eyes, and effortless style caught our eye. Championing a low maintenance beauty routine, Branch said she uses coconut oil to take makeup off, and keeps it really natural, using Josie Maran products.
Spotted at: Melrose Trading Post, shopping with her boyfriend
Beauty Tip: Though she was on a serious shopping mission at the Melrose, this Angeleno sweetly stopped to answer our prying questions on her flawless skin. “Buy pure vitamin E oil from a pharmacy, or a hospital is even better, because it’s just straight-up oil,” she said. “What I like about this is that it doesn’t have added nonsense. My bottle was $7 and I put it on my eyes (to prevent crows feet), forehead, and any area that has some acne scaring. I rarely even use foundation anymore,” she explained.
