Reviewed: BareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balm

As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day (we know—tough life). “Reviewed” is a new series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favourites in this column. Enjoy!

Some love bags, others love boys, but I love balms. Lip balms in particular. Tinted lip balms, if we’re going to get even more specific. And the new Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balms ($16) from BareMinerals are some of the most interesting ones I’ve tried. The thing about these cutely packaged balms is that they’re also incredibly pigmented, making them more like a super-hydrating, sheer lipstick-balm hybrid, rather than your typical tinted balm.

As a Maybelline Baby Lips lover, I was expecting the same sort of light wash of colour upon applying—not the case. What I ended up with was a surprisingly intense colour payoff (Rose Passion in particular leaves a true red sheen behind) with a plush, smooth, almost oil-like feel (that would be from the passion fruit seed oil and vitamin E). The best part about these balms is that instead of settling into fine lines, the pigment actually melts into your lips and leaves a stain-like tint behind. This goes for the darker shades, for the most part; I found that lighter shades like Peach Passion and Nude Passion would dry and leave those awkward white marks on the corners of my lips, but only if my lips were particularly dry.

At $16 a pop, they’re not exactly a steal, but if you’re looking for something more hydrating than your go-to lippie, these are worth every penny.
