6 Beauty-Brand Founders Share Their Anti-Ageing Secrets
Starting a business is hard. Starting a business that flourishes, grows, and becomes one of the most-loved brands in the industry almost impossible. And yet, there are so many inspiring women who done all of the above (you probably know their full names—the same names emblazoned across your holy grail highlighter, serum, and eye shadow). To say that it takes a wide breadth of knowledge about beauty and skincare to achieve such a feat is an understatement, which is why we regard these women with such awe and respect. If they’re responsible for envisioning and creating the serum we slather on each night, just imagine what their own skincare regimen must be like. We did just that—and then decided to stop imagining things and just ask some of our favourite beauty brand founders their best anti-ageing secrets. Yes, they mention their own products (can you blame them?), but there are plenty of other gems in there you’ll be glad to know about. Cheers to beautiful skin!

Aerin Lauder, Founder and Creative Director of AERIN
“My grandmother always said, ‘You only have one face; take care of it.’ No matter how tired you are, cleanse and moisturize, stay out of the sun, and drink water. This is has always been my mantra for keeping my skin looking healthy and ageless. I also really see a difference when I use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II ($92)—I've been using it for years. Glowing skin is a must for a youthful look. When I’m traveling or feeling tired, I love using AERIN’s Pretty Bronze Illuminating Powder ($58) and Eyelight Concealer ($57). The bronzer gives my skin a beautiful sun-kissed glow and the concealer cools, hydrates, and highlights the eye area. They are my secret weapons to looking awake and healthy on the go.
Fragrance plays a role in how you feel about yourself and can immediately transform your mood. If you feel a little tired and you put some perfume on, you feel pretty; you walk into a room and someone notices, it makes you feel confident. Those feelings transcend age. AERIN Rose de Grasse ($185) is the perfect example—the simple beauty and complex scent of rose makes it timeless and sophisticated.”
Joanna Vargas, Founder of Joanna Vargas Skincare
“My favorite anti-aging weapon is LED light therapy. A proven technology, it literally works on everyone! LED light is proven to not only to delay wrinkles, but it can also erase existing wrinkles with repeated sessions. Also LED light has been shown to build collagen in quantifiable percentages. That translates into better elasticity. My favorite anti-aging serum is my own Rejuvenating Serum ($100). The combination of the olive oil and argan oil eliminates fine lines around the face, while jojoba oil keeps the skin moist. Neroli and rosehips oils are great for circulation, and offer protection against sun damage and pollution.
I love a great DIY mask to make the skin look rejuvenated and alive, too. Here’s my recipe:
- 6 teaspoons grapeseed oil
- 2 drops rose oil
- 1 teaspoon warmed honey
- 5 teaspoons ground almonds to form a paste
Leave this on your skin for 20 minutes, then rinse. Grapeseed oil is an awesome antioxidant, and rose oil will restore that amazing glow we’re all looking for. Honey will hydrate the skin and erase fine lines, while the ground almonds will gently exfoliate. Beyond anti-aging, this mask is for anyone who feels their skin looks dull and tired. It's also great for anyone who has just stepped off of an airplane.”
Vicky Tsai, Founder of Tatcha
“Growing older is to be celebrated—the geisha taught me that beauty is something to be gained over time, not lost. Having said that, there are certainly a few things you can do to help your skin age as gracefully as you. Gentle daily exfoliation helps with everything from pore size to fine lines to age spots, and clearing away debris helps your treatments penetrate more deeply. Tatcha's Polished Rice Enzyme Powder ($65) uses rice bran and papaya enzymes to gently polish skin like a jewel. If you like using serum, you'll love our Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask ($95). Using sunscreen daily is important to protect your skin from sun damage that can age or blemish the skin, even when it's cloudy out. Our Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen ($68) provides broad spectrum protection SPF 35, and features Japanese wild rose extract to tighten pores for a petal-fresh finish.
Your lifestyle is important, too. When you are young, you can eat whatever you want and sleep a few hours a night and your body bounces back. As you gain wisdom and years, your body doesn't quite recover the way it used to. My personal secret is to be religious about getting eight hours of sleep every night. If you minimize drinking alcohol and eat a healthy diet, it will help you glow from the inside out. Finally, smile! If there is anything I learned from the geisha, it's that beauty begins from within. If you have a kind and joyful heart, it will make you radiant.”
Bobbi Brown, Founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
“My secrets to looking and feeling five years younger are not smoking, wearing sunscreen, drinking lots of water, and wearing moisturizer. I like to layer my moisturizers to keep my skin hydrated and fresh. First, I smooth on a lightweight lotion or serum, then I follow with a rich cream or balm (depending on the season) with sunscreen. Layering your skin with a moisturizer and serum not only hydrates, but treats your skin. And remember to exercise. Nothing makes your skin look better.
Concealer is one of my all-time favorite beauty products, and what I believe to be the secret of the universe. Yellow-based concealers and pink- or peach-based correctors are designed to cover, lift, and lighten darkness under your eyes, making you look as if you’ve had eight hours of sleep when you’ve really only had five.
Right now, I’m loving my new Intensive Skin Serum Corrector & Concealer ($40), a supercharged hybrid formula that not only covers dark under eye circles, but treats them using traditional Eastern medicine. As we age, the skin under our eyes thins, making blood vessels more visible, so a formula that hydrates and moisturizes the delicate under-eye area is just as important to keep skin looking fresh and young.”
Linda Rodin, Founder of Rodin Olio Lusso
“I would say there are no ‘anti-aging’ beauty secrets. For me, the key to aging well is all about a balanced life and taking good care of myself: eating a very healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep every night, and never burning the candle at both ends. And of course, being passionate about whatever you are doing is another key to staying young—always being engaged in something fulfilling.”

Sara Happ, Founder of Sara Happ
“My anti-aging strategy is simple: exfoliate and hydrate. I remove dead skin at night, so that the products I layer on after can sink in and do their jobs while I sleep. I keep it simple in the morning, because as the mom of a 2-year-old, who has the time? For my p.m. routine, I start by removing the day with Olay Sensitive Cleansing Cloths ($6). I sink into a steamy bubble bath and Clarisonic (yes, it's a verb to me) with Origins Checks and Balances ($19). After I step out, I pat on M-61 Vitablast Eye ($78) and massage Hydraboost Cream ($72) into my face and neck. I slather on my The Lip Slip ($24) and crawl into bed.
In the morning, I rinse with lukewarm water, then apply Origins’ A Perfect World Eye ($47) and Face ($50) with a soft brush. I smooth on Origins’ Make A Difference Rejuvenating Moisturizer ($54), then scrub my lips with The Lip Scrub $24) (currently using our newest flavor, Midnight Blueberry) and hydrate with The Pink Slip ($19).
My biggest trick to keep wrinkles at bay is M-61 Power Glow Peels ($110), which I do every Sunday night. They're packed with glycolic and salicylic acids to exfoliate, plus chamomile to soothe. On Monday mornings, I wake up looking like I just had a facial!”
