Reviewed: Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day (we know—tough life). “Reviewed” is a new series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day, or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favourites in this column. Enjoy!
I’m both a dry shampoo addict and a product loyalist. For years (at least four), I’ve used the same Ojon dry shampoo powder—not just the same brand, but the actual same bottle. I have absolutely no idea how it’s lasted so long, but within that time, the product was even reformulated from powder to aerosol.
Like most beauty fanatics, I’m also a sucker for good packaging. Which is how I came to cheat on my remaining few pinches of Ojon powder for Amika’s Perk Up Dry Shampoo ($22). Like the girl who dates a buttoned-up lawyer for years and, post break-up, ends up with a cool musician who has longer hair than she does, I went from a basic white powder in a simple blue bottle to a psychedelic aerosol with kaleidoscope colours, and I’ve never been happier. Amika’s oil-absorbing product comes in some of the coolest looking packaging I’ve ever seen in the beauty world. Stunning, eye-catching, colourful, and fun, there’s something about the bottle makes you want to carry it with you everywhere.
Of all the beauty products I keep on my vanity at home, it’s the one I reach for when I’m hitting the gym, beach, or a long weekend of location-hopping; because not only does it work, it’s a joy to carry around—even though it’s not exactly designed for travel as a 5.3 ounce aluminium canister. But its “look at me” size is part of its charm. I get a particular thrill out of seeing a peek of it in my bag, and taking it out to show off and share it with friends (who invariably want to use it). How could you not? Would you look at that thing?
But just like with significant others, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts. Despite how damn gorgeous the bottle is, the product couldn’t cut it in my life if it didn’t work, and I am obsessed with its performance. It sprays on utterly lightweight and invisible, and it makes hair feel clean, fresh, and build-up-free—like it just got double-cleansed and blown-out.
On top of the packaging and performance, it smells downright incredible—like the kind of addictive incredible where you want to spray the entire can in one sitting, just to inhale more of it. I use it every single day and plan to indefinitely. You could say it’s my soulmate.
